Managing Display Groups

Display groups bundle displays together so you can assign playlists to the whole bundle instead of to each display individually — the more screens you run, the more time this saves. This article walks you through creating and managing groups, and how groups interact with playlist priorities.

Create a group

1. Go to the Groups tab in the dashboard.
2. Click Add new group.
3. Name the group and confirm with Add new group.

Add displays to a group

1. In the list, click the newly created group's name to open its details.
2. Select the displays you want in this group.
3. Click Save changes to confirm your selection.

Assign playlists to a group

1. Go to the Playlists tab.
2. Open the playlist you want to assign.
3. Choose the group (or groups) from the dropdown.

Put a display in more than one group

A single display can belong to multiple groups. To add it to another one:

1. Open the display's settings.
2. Add it to the additional groups you need.

How priorities decide what plays

When a group has several playlists assigned and their active times overlap, the playlists' priorities decide what plays: the playlist with the highest priority wins. Each playlist has its own priority level — see Scheduling and Priority for setting and re-ranking them.

Layering playlists

Because one display can sit in multiple groups, you can layer playlists across those groups: whenever their active times overlap, the higher-priority playlist takes precedence. Exactly how a screen combines the content from its groups depends on its playback mode.

Groups and priorities scale well — from a few screens in a local shop to hundreds of displays in a large commercial center.

Can a display be in more than one group?

A: Yes — a single display can belong to as many groups as you need. Add it to more groups from the display's settings.

What plays when two playlists overlap on the same group?

A: The one with the higher priority. See Scheduling and Priority for how to rank your playlists.

Why did a screen go blank after I edited a group?

A: Group changes take effect as soon as you save them, so a display removed from a group may be left with nothing to play. Make sure every display still belongs to a group with an assigned playlist.
